"Rolling" out another great show, The Student Dance Company's "Legendary" show this weekend was a beautiful (and fun!) thing to behold. The choreography was bursting with the talents, personality, emotions and creativity of this student-led group. The students put the show and choreographed all of the pieces themselves after organizing and running rehearsals since January. If you're 4th grade and up, look into this fun and valuable learning experience this Fall...they hold auditions in September! Great show everyone; congrats!

A group of DSD instructors (joined by the lovely Ms. Judy, without whom we could not function on payment days!) was released in New York City this Spring. There was an obnoxious amount of laughter and lots of new adventures (we actually went to two museums and rode a carousel in DUMBO!). It was a blast and a great way to bond. Hoping more teacher trips are on the horizon...
The DSD Student Dance Company had their annual sleepover this weekend. The Company has been around for over 30 years, and this tradition is a great way for the participants in this student-led organization to bond even more as well as get in some extra practice. Between the late-night rehearsals, games and other shenanigans, there wasn't much sleeping but there was a lot of fun had by all.
DSD students and teachers visited VCU to support new student Ella Richmond, who entered two pieces in an "Open Marley Night" started by her former instructor. The event was an open invitation to local dancers to showcase finished works or works in progress and audience feedback was encouraged. It was a stimulating night of dance and contemplation of the artform. We were so proud of Ella -- not only did she perform beautifully, she handled questions and comments about her piece with grace. We hope to participate as a studio next year as well! Congrats Ella on a great job!
Miss Samantha brought her Sr. Pom class to Randolph Macon College to perform a routine they learned and performed with current RMC dance team members. It made for an exciting halftime show! Miss Samantha is a graduate of RMC and the former captain of the RMC dance team, so it was great fun for her to bring her students to perform at her alma mater. Go Yellowjackets!
"The Night that the Sky Joined In" was a Christmas Show to remember, with a traveling theme that was sure to be a hit at DSD (some of the suitcases featured in the show have been on many of our real DSD trips!). Stuck in the airport trying to get home for Christmas, the fictional family in our show renewed their focus on the true meaning of Christmas after a fateful encounter with a stranger in the airport. We hope the story, singing and dancing touched your hears as well. Safe travels this Christmas everyone!
Dawn got see another one of our favorite alumni dance performing in the Nutcracker at Radford University. Paige looked beautiful on stage and made all of us at DSD very proud. The pic below is of a previous trip during which Dawn got to see the multi-talented Miss Lake do a halftime pom routine with her dance team. We can't wait to see more from Paige!!!
Another great trip to see the DSD alumni Bella (pictured here with us in her natural state, haha!) do a gorgeous performance at JMU, where she is studying as a dance major. We have been to see her performances several times and we are always blown away by their artistry. We are so incredibly proud of you Bella and can't wait to see more from you! Normal pic below.
We made it back to the most Magical Place On Earth! It was heartbreaking that we couldn't go in 2020 (Covid messed up our plans again!) and fulfill our every-other-year tradition, but luckily we got right back on track this year -- accepted happily by the Disney team to do another performance. On the way down we strolled down the Savannah River Walk and then we took a class taught by a theme-park performer. We had the Disney staff in the booth dancing along and saying we rocked our show. After that, it was all fun and games...we had a blast at three parks and squeezed in some time at our hotel pool. Another great trip in the books!
We love these talented dancers...can't wait to see the places they will go and the things they will do. Congrats Olivia, Emma, Ashlee, Emily and Gianna!
