At DSD we love to spread our love of dance throughout our community and when we travel. Check out all of the dance opportunities we offer to our students below.
The Student Dance Company is an entirely student-produced group, formed in the Fall of 1992 to give dancers the opportunity to create and showcase their own work. They elect their own officers, choreograph all their material, and put on their own production without the help of the school’s instructors. Their love of dance drives them to dedicate many hours to rehearsals in addition to their weekly classes. It’s an incredible learning experience for all involved as they witness their creativity come to life, develop leadership skills, and gain training and teaching experience. Auditions will be held during the fall semester (date/time TBA) and the company show will be presented in the spring (typically in April). See the COMPANY page for participant information.
DSD's Competitive Dance Team is an opportunity for our most dedicated students to exhibit their skills through competitive dancing. The team travels to several local comptetitions a year, and as won numerous trophies in their categories. We welcome rising 4th-12th grade students to audition. To participate, eligible students must try out for a spot on the team and are responsible for paying the associated fees and attending a weekly team class. Participants must be enrolled in both ballet and jazz classes, and must have an excellent attendance record in all classes (no unexcused absences). The Dance Team is coached by DSD instructor Tiffany Allen. See the TEAM page for participant information.
Our annual not-for-profit Christmas production, O'Night Divine, illustrates the story of Christ's Holy Birth through song, dance and narrative. The program immerses the audience in the holiday spirit through a creative celebration of the true meaning of Christmas. All students are encouraged to participate in this faithful witness to their community, as the production is open to all ages and dance styles. There is a single $25 fee to participate (costumes are provided). Admission to the show is free, and donations are encouraged (all proceeds benefit King William Emergency Ministries). O'Night Divine is produced under the direction of DSD intructor Tiffany King, and students may contact her to sign up for the show at the beginning of the Fall Semester. See the OND page for participant information.
This year we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary year with the DSD Legacy Tour, which will start with an alumni trip to New York City in July. We are planning a trip to L.A. for Senior Team and Senior Company dancers this January, details TBA. And we may add more to the list, so be on the lookout for Legacy Tour news!
The Legacy Tour will also make a stop at Disney World this year!!! Every other year, the Senior classes at Dawn's School of Dance apply to perform at Walt Disney World through their Disney Performing Arts Onstage program (and every year we've applied we've been accepted!). Participants perform on the main stage at Disney Springs and experience what it is like to audition to become a Disney World performer during a workshop instructed by professional Disney choreographers. They also spend three days exploring the Disney parks with their friends! The trip, held sometime in June, is made possible through fundraising efforts, and students who participate are required to help with fundraising in addition to paying a fee. It is a great opportunity to dance at a spectacular venue!
New York, New York...it's a wonderful town, especially for dancers, and that's exactly why Dawn decided to start a tradition in 2012: a Senior trip to New York City. Each year since then, Dawn invites her graduating senior students to join her and a few chaperones in New York City last November. The trip includes sightseeing, a ticket to see the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular live at Radio City Music Hall, and an opportunity to dance at the Broadway Dance center. The trip is a cultural experience and fun way to bond. We are always thinking of new travel opportunities for our dancers, and whenever we make plans we work very hard to keep the expense low, find easy fundraisers, and make the experience priceless! Visit our NEWS blog page to see where we've been and what we've been up to at Dawn's School of Dance.
